Hi.
Let me introduce myself.
My name is Karen, I passed my driving test in 1980. I have always enjoyed driving for pleasure so once my children had grown up I decided to change my career. I was and am passionate about putting safe drivers on the road and was fortunate to find there were vacancies to become a driving examiner.
I qualified to be a DVSA driving instructor in January 2004, passing all the relevant exams first time (leaving in June 2017).
I took approximately 20,000 driving tests and worked in many different areas; some local i.e Garston, Norris Green, Blackburn, Northwich, St. Helens and Warrington and some further away i.e London, Birmingham, Derby, Northampton, Kettering etc. – this gave me a varied experience of candidates.
Whilst being an examiner there have been some changes to the driving test, the biggest being the introduction of the independent drive section; initially requiring verbal instructions or use of diagrams and recently incorporating satnav or following road signs.
During this time I would say the main downfalls of drivers who were in fact ready for their test was nerves and the unknown – as an examiner it became increasingly frustrating because of these issues to not pass candidates who you knew were good drivers. It was then I felt there must be something that I could do to alleviate this … and so Rock the Mock was my answer.
I am also a committee member of the Warrington ADI association and also take automatic driving lessons.
